Osirak Anniversary

June 7th, 1981.

This is one of the more amazing stories of the 20th century (a century with a lot of amazing stories). It's Luke Skywalker and the Death Star in real life, a modern day Dam Busters (er, the other Death Star in real life).

Bob Dylan even wrote a song about it, "Neighborhood Bully".

"Then he destroyed a bomb factory, nobody was glad. The bombs were meant for him; he was supposed to feel bad."

Want to see lefties go crazy? Watch when the great 60's prophet Bob advocates a pre-emptive strike.

"One of the Israeli pilots on the mission was Ilan Ramon, who would later become Israel's first astronaut and died in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster on February 1, 2003." Sounds like a modern day Jimmy Doolittle.

The really amazing part of this story? There are people who will tell you 25 years later (after the invasion of Kuwait) that it wasn't a good idea!

"…actually, what Israel [did] is that it got out the immediate danger out of the way."

You know, when someone is getting ready to point nuclear weapons at you, I think you are most concerned with the immediate danger. That's why it's immediate.

"But the program we built later in secret would make six bombs a year."

But Iraq wasn't a threat. And it's all about the oil. Can someone give me Dean Scream, please?

If you haven't read it yet, I highly recommend "Raid on the Sun : Inside Israel's Secret Campaign that Denied Saddam the Bomb" by Rodger Claire. I lent my copy to my Dad - maybe you'd like to borrow it at our next lunch?

Yeah, I've been meaning to read that ever since, well, since you told me about it a few years ago. Bring it, that'd be swell.

Well, because you asked-

Dean Scream

(and because I had nothing of substance to add!)

{Trying to post this a second time....the first time the link didn't come out right}
